Certain species can carry a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease.
One important misconception is that the disease is simply transmitted through the bite itself.
The parasite can be transmitted when infected insect feces enter the body through the bite wound, an open cut, the eyes, or the mouth.
This is why avoiding contact with the insect and washing your hands after handling it is important.
What Should You Do After a Suspected Bite?
If you believe you’ve been bitten:
- Clean the area carefully.
Wash the skin with soap and plenty of water.
- Avoid scratching.
Even an ordinary insect bite can become infected if the skin is repeatedly broken.
- Don’t crush the insect against your skin.
If the insect is still nearby, avoid touching it with bare hands.
- Take
