This distinction matters. Black pigment spots on an otherwise healthy pink tongue are very different from a tongue that turns bluish, purplish, gray, or unusually pale all over. A generalized color change can suggest poor oxygenation, circulation problems, overheating, shock, or other urgent issues.
If your dog’s whole tongue suddenly looks blue-gray instead of pink, or the gums lose their healthy bubblegum color, that’s not a “wait and see for three days” situation. That’s a same-day veterinary issue, and in severe cases an emergency. Pigment spots are patchy and localized; oxygen-related color changes affect the overall tone.
