- What you’re most likely seeing is harmless pigment
In the vast majority of cases, flat black or dark blue-black spots on a dog’s tongue are just pigment. Think of them like freckles or birthmarks. They can appear as a few specks the size of a pencil eraser, or as larger patches 0.5 to 2 inches across. They’re usually flat, not raised, and they don’t seem to bother the dog at all.
People often associate dark tongues with Chow Chows or Shar-Peis, but pigment spots can show up in all kinds of dogs, including Labs, Golden mixes, shepherds, and plenty of completely ordinary family dogs
