Lifted a pot and found this squirming mass of tiny gray coils on the damp soil. It looks like a living pile of metallic springs. Is this something to worry about?

  1. When their presence is a sign you should investigate moisture

Finding a few millipedes in the yard is normal. Finding dozens under a pot is still pretty normal. But if you’re seeing large numbers repeatedly near the foundation, inside the garage, in basement window wells, or along door thresholds, it’s worth checking for excess moisture.

Look for clogged gutters, downspouts dumping water too close to the house, leaking outdoor faucets, overwatered beds, or mulch piled against siding. Ideally, downspouts should carry water at least 4 to 6 feet away from the foundation. Mulch is best kept a few inches back from the house, and the soil should slope away rather than toward it.
