Jar lids aren’t all the same diameter.
A small jar of jam might have a completely different lid size from a large pasta-sauce jar.
Many under-cabinet openers were therefore designed with adjustable gripping sections.
Depending on the particular model, you might see:
Sliding jaws
Adjustable teeth
Rotating knobs
Clamping mechanisms
Rubberized gripping surfaces
The exact design varies, but the goal is the same:
Get a secure grip on the lid without damaging the jar.
The Genius of the Design Is How Little Space It Takes
This might be my favorite part.
A normal jar opener lives in a drawer.
You have to find it.
An under-cabinet jar opener simply waits.
It’s almost invisible until the moment you need it.
And then suddenly you’re standing there thinking:
“Whoever installed this knew exactly what they were doing.”
That’s one of the things I love about older kitchens.
