How to Tell What’s on Your Own Hotel Ceiling

A few quick visual cues sort most of it out:

A fine perforated or mesh circle, flush-mounted, is usually a speaker.

A unit sitting slightly lower with a blinking light and a test button is a smoke or heat detector.

A small boxy sensor, sometimes near a corner, could be a vaping detector on certain properties.

In my experience, this is the kind of thing you only notice flat on your back at midnight, staring up while the room hums. I’ve laid there convinced the little grille was watching me, then felt slightly silly the next morning. If it genuinely bugs you, the front desk knows their own building’s system and can just tell you.
