Confusing
Mirrors create an even stronger reflection.
Unlike a window, a mirror generally doesn’t allow the bird to see through to another room or the outdoors. It simply presents a clear image.
A bird may see what looks like another bird moving exactly when it moves.
That can create a strange interaction:
The bird moves closer.
The reflection moves closer.
The bird pecks.
The reflection pecks back.
From the bird’s perspective, it may appear as though the “other bird” is refusing to leave.
No wonder the conflict can continue!
Why Does This Happen More During Breeding Season?
Birds become particularly territorial during breeding season.
A male bird, for example, may defend an area that contains food, nesting locations, or a potential mate.
