As the brown recluse butterfly spreads in France, more and more houses are becoming its discreet refuge. Dark corners, insects, and cracks play a key, though rarely obvious, role.

You take a box out of the garage, a small brown-beige spider scurries into a corner, and panic sets in: what if it’s a brown recluse? This discreet spider can inject venom that causes loxoscelism, with destruction of skin tissue. Knowing what attracts it into a house already helps to regain some control.

In mainland France, the brown recluse is known as Loxosceles rufescens, a relative of Loxosceles reclusa. It remains primarily found in the South and the Mediterranean basin, but is spreading northward. With a brown body measuring 5 to 10 mm, a violin-shaped marking on the front of its thorax, and nocturnal behavior, it prefers cellars and attics to living spaces.
