Once a tomato has been cut, refrigerate the unused portion promptly.
That’s an important difference between a whole tomato and one that’s already been sliced.
You might think putting bread in the refrigerator will make it last longer.
But refrigeration can actually make bread go stale more quickly.
The cold temperature accelerates changes in the bread’s starch structure, contributing to that dry, firm texture we associate with stale bread.
So where should bread go?
For bread you’ll eat within a few days, room-temperature storage in a suitable bread bag, bread box, or other protective container is usually preferable.
If you have more bread than you can reasonably eat soon, freezing is generally a better long-term option than refrigerating it.
