A homeless young man spent his last $12 buying yellow roses for my mother’s eightieth birthday. Months later, after she died, I discovered she’d specifically requested his presence at the reading of her will. I assumed she wanted to leave him a little money. But when the attorney placed a locked wooden box in front of him, my brother jumped to his feet and shouted, “Don’t open that!” His reaction made me realize there was something about Mom’s final wishes I didn’t understand. My mother was eighty when she befriended a homeless man named Ethan. He was only twenty-four. Everything he owned fit inside an old backpack, and most nights he slept behind a bookstore that had closed years earlier. They first met outside a pharmacy. Mom had accidentally dropped her shopping bags, sending groceries rolling across the sidewalk. Several people walked around her without offering help. Ethan was the only one who stopped. He knelt beside her, collected the scattered groceries, and helped carry everything to her car. Mom thanked him and asked his name. That small encounter became the beginning of an unexpected friendship. Soon, Ethan started visiting every Thursday. He helped Mom bring in her groceries. He repaired the loose boards on her porch steps. Sometimes he stayed for dinner and listened while she talked about my father, who had passed away years earlier. Mom loved telling stories about their marriage. And Ethan, unlike many people, never seemed impatient to hear them. He listened as though every memory mattered. When Mom’s eightieth birthday arrived, Ethan appeared at her door holding a bouquet of yellow roses. They weren’t expensive flowers. But they were beautiful. Mom burst into tears when she saw them. Later, I learned that Ethan had spent his last twelve dollars buying that bouquet. I couldn’t understand his decision. “Ethan, why would you spend every penny you had on flowers?” I asked. He simply shrugged. “Everybody deserves flowers on their birthday. Especially your mom.” His answer stayed with me. He had almost nothing, yet he’d given away everything in his pocket just to make an elderly woman smile. Over the following months, Mom and Ethan became even closer. She worried about where he slept. She made sure he had warm meals. And whenever he visited, she seemed happier than she’d been in years. Then one Sunday afternoon, Mom said something that nearly made me drop my coffee. “I asked Ethan to marry me.” I stared at her. “Mom, what?” She repeated herself calmly. “I proposed to Ethan.” “He’s twenty-four! You’re eighty!” She smiled sadly. “I know exactly how old we both are.” “Then why would you do that?” Mom looked toward the window. “Because I wanted him to have a home. Somewhere he could feel safe. Someone who would care about what happened to him.” I didn’t know what to say. Then she told me Ethan had refused. “He said he couldn’t marry me just because he needed a place to live,” she explained. “He thought that would be taking advantage of my kindness.” I was surprised. Ethan could have accepted her offer and gained the security he’d been missing for years. Instead, he’d turned it down. Mom seemed disappointed, but she respected his decision. Three months later, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Losing her was devastating. While preparing for the funeral and sorting through her belongings, I discovered a handwritten note. It contained a very specific request. Mom wanted Ethan present when her will was read. I assumed she’d arranged to leave him some money. It seemed like something she would do. So I tracked him down and told him about the appointment. At first, Ethan hesitated. “I don’t think I belong there,” he said. “Mom wanted you there,” I replied. “That’s enough for me.” On the appointed day, he arrived at the attorney’s office wearing a coat he’d borrowed from someone. His familiar backpack hung from one shoulder. He looked uncomfortable the moment he entered. My brother noticed him immediately. His expression hardened. “Why is he here?” he demanded. “Because Mom requested it.” My brother shook his head but said nothing more. We sat around the conference table as the attorney opened a thick folder. He reviewed the ordinary details of Mom’s estate. Her property. Her accounts. The arrangements she’d made before her death. Everything seemed straightforward. Then the attorney paused. “There’s one additional matter your mother instructed me to address.” He looked directly at Ethan. “It concerns you.” Ethan lowered his eyes. I glanced at my brother. Something about his expression had changed. The attorney reached beneath his desk and brought out a small wooden box. It was old-fashioned, with a little brass lock on the front. He placed it carefully on the table. My brother immediately sat upright. “Wait. What’s that?” The attorney didn’t answer him. Instead, he took a tiny brass key from the folder and handed it to Ethan. Ethan stared at it. “I don’t understand.” “Your mother left specific instructions concerning this box,” the attorney explained. Before he could continue, my brother suddenly stood. “Why is that box here?” His voice was sharp enough to make everyone turn. I frowned. “What’s wrong with you?” He ignored me. His eyes were fixed on the box. Ethan slowly turned the key between his fingers. Then he reached toward the lock. My brother moved so quickly that his chair scraped loudly across the floor. “Don’t open it!” Everyone froze. I stared at him. “Why not?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped toward Ethan. “Whatever you do, don’t open that box!” But Ethan had already inserted the key. A soft click broke the silence. The lock opened. Ethan lifted the lid. Then he reached inside. My brother stood motionless, his face filled with panic. I’d never seen him react that way. And suddenly, I realized Mom might have left Ethan something far more complicated than a little financial help. Whatever was hidden inside that wooden box, my brother clearly knew something about it. Something he desperately didn’t want the rest of us to discover. What had Mom placed inside the box, and why was my brother so terrified that Ethan would open it?
