Does Unplugging Appliances Save Electricity?

you save depends on three main factors:

How much standby power each appliance uses
How long it remains plugged in
Your electricity price
Let’s look at a simple example.

Suppose a device draws 5 watts of standby power continuously.

To estimate its annual electricity use, multiply its wattage by the number of hours in a year and divide by 1,000.

For this example:

5 watts × 8,760 hours ÷ 1,000 = 43.8 kilowatt-hours per year.

If your electricity costs $0.20 per kilowatt-hour, that device would use about $8.76 worth of electricity annually while drawing that constant standby power.

That’s only an illustration—not a claim that every television, charger, or appliance uses 5 watts in standby mode.

Some devices consume much less, while others may use more. Your actual savings will depend on measured consumption and your local electricity rate.
